Two ways to deal with gray

Cover it. Permanent dye is placed over the gray hairs so they take on a shade close to the rest. This is the usual choice when you want gray to disappear. When gray is only at the roots, a root touch-up is enough. When it is spread all over, a full-head color is more even.

Blend it. Lighter strands are woven through the hair so gray hairs sit among them and stand out less. This is what gray-blending highlights do. It can be a good fit if you are tired of root lines every few weeks.

Why gray hair is hard to color

Gray hairs have lost their pigment. They are often coarser and have a smoother surface, so they can resist dye. Dye on gray can also come out lighter or warmer than on dark hairs, and a very dark shade can make the first few roots look stripey. Designers usually adjust the formula and the timing for gray hair, and explain what they do.

Because of this, a color that looks natural on a photo might need a slightly warmer or deeper base to cover well. Listen to the designer’s advice about depth.

How much gray decides the method

  • A few gray hairs: a gentle tone or a root service may be enough.
  • Gray along the hairline and part: a root service targets exactly that.
  • Gray all over: full-head color, or blending if you want a softer, lower-upkeep look.

Show the designer where the gray is, since the front hairline often turns gray first. If your gray is patchy, say so.

Upkeep

Covered gray grows back as a visible line at the root. How soon that matters depends on how much gray you have and how dark your color is. Many people redo roots every few weeks to a couple of months, and the designer suggests a schedule that fits you. Blended gray grows out more softly, so visits can be spaced further apart.

Color-safe shampoo and low heat keep the shade even. Gray hair can also be drier, so a conditioner or a hair clinic treatment can help.

Tell the designer

Say how much gray you have, how often you dyed so far and whether you used box dye. Mention scalp sensitivity or allergies to dye so the designer can plan safely.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a shade much lighter than your natural color. Gray hairs take the dye differently, and a light result can leave the gray looking yellow or translucent.
  • Waiting until the gray is everywhere. Early gray is easier to blend into the overall color.
  • Mixing home dye and salon dye without saying so. Layers of old dye change how new color takes.
  • Skipping the patch of scalp that itches after dye. Tell the designer about any irritation so the product or method can change.

If you are happy to let the gray grow in, ask about a plan that moves toward full gray in stages.
