Updo styles you can ask for
An updo is any style that lifts hair off the neck. Common versions are:
- Low bun or chignon: a smooth or textured knot at the nape. It suits formal dinners and weddings.
- High bun or ponytail: clean and bright; good with off-shoulder outfits and wide necklines.
- Half-up, half-down: the top section is pinned up and the rest falls loose. It works for medium to long hair and for shorter lengths.
- Braided updo: braids pinned into a crown or bun. It looks detailed and usually holds well on thicker hair.
- Loose, tousled updo: soft pieces left out around the face, for a relaxed look.
Pick a photo that matches your own length and thickness.
What to bring to the appointment
- Two or three photos of the style, including the back.
- A photo of the outfit, or a note about the neckline and back. It decides whether a low or high style works.
- Any hair accessories you plan to wear, such as pins, combs or a clip.
- The event time and how long you will wear the style. Dinner and an all-day event place different demands on a style.
Bringing your own accessories keeps the result exactly as you planned. Whether the salon supplies any is not stated, so ask.
How to prepare your hair
Updos hold better on hair with some grip. Freshly washed, very soft hair slips out of pins, so many stylists prefer hair that is dry, clean and not coated with conditioner. Because practices differ, ask the designer whether to wash the night before or the morning of your visit. Brush out tangles and avoid heavy oils. If your hair is very fine, tell the designer so they can add texture or backcombing for hold.
Short or fine hair
If your hair is short, a half-up style, a small low knot or pinned-back sides may work better than a full bun. If it is fine, extra volume can come from the styling or from added hair pieces. The hair extensions page explains that option, and you should ask the designer what is realistic for your length. A bob or a recent cut may need a different plan, so tell the designer what you are working with.
Combine with a cut or blow-dry
A cut a week or two before an event gives the shape time to settle. See the women’s haircut page for cut prices. A smooth blow-dry is a different service, described on the blowout page. Ask the designer how long to allow for your style, and see how to book for the steps. We are open every day from 10:00 to 20:00.
