Why curly hair needs a different plan
Curls bounce back. A section that is 15 cm when pulled straight may sit at about half that length once it curls. That means a cut judged on wet, straightened hair can end up much shorter than you expected. Experienced designers account for this by checking the curl in its natural state and cutting conservatively.
Curls also differ along one head. Hair at the crown may be tight while hair at the nape is loose. Tell the designer if your pattern changes in different areas.
Arrive with your curls in their natural state
The most useful thing you can do is show your real curl. Before your visit:
- Skip the flat iron or blow-dry the day before, if you can, so the designer sees your natural pattern.
- Wear the hair the way it dries naturally. Avoid a tight ponytail that leaves a dent.
- Bring a photo of your hair air-dried and, if you have one, a photo of the style you are aiming for.
If you straighten your hair every day, say so. The designer needs to know whether the cut is for curly hair or for hair you usually keep straight.
Natural curl, permed curl or both?
Tell the designer where your curl comes from. Natural curl usually returns in the same pattern as it grows. Permed curl is chemical, so the curl near your roots is different from the curl at the ends, and the designer may cut off or reshape the older curled length.
