What “build perm” means
The word “build” refers to building body and shape into the hair. In Korean salons a build perm usually means large, flowing waves with volume that grows toward the lower half of longer hair. The look is fuller and more shaped than a plain straight cut.
The term has no single official definition. One salon may use it for a loose S-shaped wave, another for a volume-focused layered wave. So treat the name as a starting point and confirm the shape with photos.
How it differs from similar perms
- S-curl: a double-bend wave that can start higher and look softer and lighter.
- C-curl: a single bend, mostly at the ends.
- Jelly perm: usually a bouncier, glossier look.
- Layered perm: our menu perm that adds movement to a layered cut.
Build perms often overlap with S-curl in practice. The main difference is the emphasis on volume and layered shape, rather than on the wave line alone.
Which hair and cuts suit it
Build perms need length and layers to show the shape, so they usually suit hair past the shoulders. Long layers and face-framing layers give the perm room to move. Fine hair can gain visible body. Very thick or heavy hair may need a bigger wave pattern or thinning, and the designer will say what works.
Preparing for a build perm
Bring photos from the front, side and back, and write down:
- How long you want to keep the hair, since waves shorten the look.
- Your color, bleach and perm history with dates.
- Whether you tie your hair up most days, because tied-up waves flatten at the root.
Long hair with many chemical treatments may be fragile at the ends. A damaged hair repair step before the perm may be suggested.

The usual steps are cleansing, wrapping the hair in sections on rods, applying solution, rinsing, setting and drying. We do not publish a fixed duration, because it depends on your hair. Ask the designer for an estimate.
After the perm
Use a gentle shampoo, a conditioner suited to permed hair and a light oil or cream on the ends. Detangle from the bottom up with a wide-tooth comb. Air-dry or use a diffuser, and avoid pulling the waves tight into a high ponytail soon after the perm. Waves often last several months and soften as the hair grows.
