When to take extensions out
Extensions should come out when the attachment points have moved down with your hair growth, or sooner if you notice problems. Signs that it is time:
- The joins have grown a long way from the scalp and the hair is pulling.
- Tangles or knots are forming where your hair meets the extension.
- Your scalp itches, feels sore or has residue buildup.
- A tape, bond or weft has slipped or started to peel.
- The extension hair looks dry or its tone no longer matches yours.
If you are traveling, take the removal into account before your flight home or the next stop. Leaving extensions in too long makes removal harder, and it is easier to plan a visit than to find time on a travel day.
How removal usually works
The method depends on the type. Salons generally use a remover solution or oil to loosen tape adhesive, heat or special tools to open bonded strands, and careful cutting of threads for sewn wefts.
