What scalp scaling means
The name comes from the Korean word for scaling (스케일링), used in dental care too. For the scalp, it means a thorough exfoliating cleanse. A scaling product or tool loosens flakes, hardened oil and styling-product residue from the scalp surface and around the hair roots, and the scalp is then rinsed.

How often is too often?
Because it exfoliates, scaling is generally done occasionally, not every week. Many scalp-care providers suggest a gap of a few weeks between sessions, but this varies with scalp type, and your designer will advise you. Over-scrubbing can leave the scalp tight, dry or sensitive, which can make flaking worse.
Scaling compared with a head spa
A head spa is usually about relaxation, with a longer massage and a gentler feel. Scaling is about removing buildup. Some guests choose one, some ask for both in a visit. Before and after
Before: tell the designer about sensitive skin, product allergies and recent chemical services. Do not scratch the scalp hard in the days before.
After: be gentle for a day or two. Avoid very hot water and harsh shampoos, and keep heavy styling products off the scalp. Sun protection helps if your scalp is exposed, for example along a parting.
Compare it with hair loss care if thinning is your concern; scaling does not treat hair loss.
