What makes it ombre

Ombre is French for “shaded”. The roots stay dark and the color lightens gradually down the length, ending in the lightest shade at the tips. The change is more visible than in balayage, which blends in softer, irregular strokes.

Because the roots are left alone, there is no regrowth line. The color just moves down as hair grows, and the look stays intentional for a long time.

Two common styles

  • Natural ombre: the ends are a few shades lighter, such as caramel or brown. The change is gentle.
  • Strong ombre: the ends are much lighter, such as blonde, ash or a fashion shade. The contrast is clear.

You can also choose where the gradient begins: near the ears, mid-length or only on the lowest section. Tell the designer where you want the darker part to end, using your own hair as a reference, for example “at my collarbone”.

How it is done on dark hair

The lower part of the hair is bleached, with the lightener blended upward so there is no hard line. A toner then sets the tone, which could be warm brown, beige or ash. For a strong contrast, a second round on the ends is sometimes needed, as with double bleach.

The ends are the oldest and driest part of your hair, so they take the most stress. Healthy ends lift more evenly. Damaged ends may need a trim, and the designer may suggest cutting before coloring.

Length and cut matter

Ombre needs enough length for a gradient to show. On short hair there is little room, and the effect may look like a block of lighter color. Layers also change the look: lightened layered ends separate, which adds movement. Talk with the designer about whether to color first or cut first. The women’s haircut page covers cuts.

Care and grow-out

The dark root area needs no upkeep, which is the main appeal. The lightened ends still need care, since bleach leaves them dry and prone to yellow tones. Use a shampoo for colored hair, limit heat and ask about a hair clinic treatment. Many people trim the ends as the style grows out.
