How to Explain Your Hairstyle to a Korean Stylist

The clearest way to explain a hairstyle to a Korean stylist is two or three photos, one length in centimeters and one sentence on how you style it each morning.

Photos: what makes them useful

A photo carries more than words, but only if it is the right photo.

  • Show the back and side too. A front-only photo hides the layers and the line at the nape.
  • Choose someone with hair like yours. Thick, fine, straight and wavy hair behave differently. A model with different hair shows the outline, not your result.
  • Bring a photo of what you do not want. It is quick, and it prevents the most common misunderstanding.
  • Add a photo of your hair now. It lets the designer see the starting point in your own words and light.

Store photos on your phone where you can open them quickly. Screenshots of social media posts work fine.

Length: use centimeters and body landmarks

“Shoulder length” can mean different things. Two methods remove the doubt:

  1. State a number: “cut 3 cm” or “keep the length, only tidy the ends.”
  2. Point to a landmark: chin line (턱선), shoulder (어깨), collarbone (쇄골).

Hair shrinks as it dries, and curly or permed hair springs up shorter. If your hair is wet when it is cut, ask the designer how much shorter it will look when dry.

A short phrase list

These phrases are polite, simple Korean, with a rough romanization. Pronunciation does not need to be perfect, and showing the text on your phone works too.

  • Just a trim: 다듬기만 해 주세요 (da-deum-gi-man hae ju-se-yo)
  • Keep the length: 길이는 그대로 해 주세요 (gi-ri-neun geu-dae-ro hae ju-se-yo)
  • Not too short: 너무 짧게 하지 마세요 (neo-mu jjal-ge ha-ji ma-se-yo)
  • Layers: 층 (cheung) or 레이어드 (re-i-eo-deu)
  • Bangs: 앞머리 (ap-meo-ri)
  • Make it lighter or thinner: 숱을 쳐 주세요 (su-cheul chyeo ju-se-yo)
  • Part: 가르마 (ga-reu-ma)

The phrases are for emergencies. A photo and a number will do more than grammar.

Say how you live with your hair

These facts change the cut more than the photo does:

  • How long you spend on your hair each morning.
  • Dryer only, dryer and iron, or air-dry.
  • A cowlick, a double crown or a strong parting direction.
  • Your hair history, with dates: color, bleach, perm, straightening.

Then ask for confirmation: “Can you tell me what you will do before you start?” A good designer repeats the plan in simple words. If something sounds wrong, stop it there. It is easier to change a plan than a haircut. If you are not sure which shape fits, read about the styles in our women’s and men’s guides first.

Common misunderstandings

A few words cause most of the trouble:

  • “Layers.” Some people mean light movement and others mean a clear step. Show where the shortest layer should land.
  • “Trim.” To one person it is a few millimeters, to another a few centimeters. Use a number.
  • “Natural.” It can mean no visible styling, or a shape that looks effortless but needs a dryer. Say whether you will use heat.
  • “Light.” It may mean a lighter shade, less weight, or fewer layers. Name which one.

Korean designers often suggest a change, such as shorter bangs or softer layers, to fit your hair type. Think of this as advice, and say yes or no after you have heard the reason.

FAQ

Questions guests ask

How many photos should I bring?

Two or three: one front, one side or back, and one of what you do not want. A photo of your current hair also helps.

How do I say “do not cut too much” in Korean?

너무 짧게 하지 마세요 (neo-mu jjal-ge ha-ji ma-se-yo) means not too short. Pairing it with a centimeter number is clearer still.

What if the stylist says it will not suit my hair?

Ask why and what they would change. A designer who sees a problem in your hair type or condition is giving you useful information.

Can I change my mind in the middle of the cut?

Yes, and it is better to say so early. Stop politely and describe what you want to change before more hair is cut.
